About Fold & Squish
Fold & Squish is the folded paper painting you probably did at school, rebuilt so the paint feels real. Paint on one half of the page, fold it shut, rub it, then peel it open. The paint has squished into a mirror image, and no two prints come out the same.
The paint is thick and wet. It spreads when you press on it, colors mix where they touch, and the paper leaves fine veins in it as it peels apart. Kids love it, and grown-ups find it oddly calming.
On iPhone Duo, your phone is the paper. Paint on the open screen, then close the phone for real and the painting folds shut with it. Rub the outside screen to squish the paint, open the phone again, and there's your print. On any other iPhone or iPad, the Fold button folds the page.
Features
- Real-feeling wet paint, simulated on the GPU: it spreads, mixes and peels apart with paper veins
- On iPhone Duo, close the real phone to fold the painting and rub the outside screen to squish it
- A brush, big splats, drippy drops, finger smudging and a magic straw that blows paint into wiggly shapes
- Fold again over the top to add another layer
- Faint pencil guides to start from, like a butterfly, an owl, a flower or a ladybug
- Apple Pencil on iPad: the pencil paints and fingers smudge, with pressure, tilt and hover
- Paintings save as you go and get taped up on a gallery wall
- No ads, no accounts, no tracking; buying and sharing sit behind a grown-ups check
Ten years from INKS. to wet paint
Ten years ago Dan Fountain was the game designer and technical artist behind the fluid-dynamics ink in INKS., State of Play's pinball game, which won a 2016 Apple Design Award. Phones have caught up with what that ink was only hinting at.
Fold & Squish rebuilds the idea as the butterfly painting every child makes at school: thick, wet paint that squishes, mixes and peels apart, running as a Metal compute simulation on today's Apple GPUs. Its toughest tester was Dan's four-year-old.

Fold & Squish brings the school butterfly painting to iPhone, iPad and iPhone Duo
On iPhone Duo the phone is the paper: close it to fold the painting, rub the outside screen to squish it, and open it to see the print.
Fountain Interactive today released Fold & Squish, a painting toy for iPhone, iPad and iPhone Duo. Paint on one half of the page, fold it shut, give it a squish and peel it open: the paint has squished into a mirror print, and no two come out the same.
The paint is a real-time simulation. It is thick and wet, spreads when you press on it, mixes where colors touch and leaves fine paper veins as the page peels apart. It comes from Dan Fountain, the game designer and technical artist behind the fluid ink in State of Play's INKS., which won a 2016 Apple Design Award.
On the new iPhone Duo, folding is physical. Close the phone and the painting folds shut with it; rub the outside screen to squish the paint; open the phone again to find the print. On other iPhones and on iPad, a Fold button does the same job, and on iPad Apple Pencil paints while fingers smudge.
Fold & Squish is made for children and grown-ups alike. It has no ads, accounts or tracking, and collects no data. Buying and sharing sit behind a grown-ups check.
Availability. Fold & Squish is available now on the App Store as a free download (https://apps.apple.com/app/id6822789179). The free version has every tool and keeps six paintings; the optional Sparkle Pack is a one-time purchase that adds gold glitter, star glitter, rainbow paint, every pencil guide and room for as many paintings as you like.
